I don’t know who needs to hear this, but everyone kills plants, once and a while. Some just more often than others. Everyone posts about the successes, everyone likes and shares the perfect looking plants, including me. I like to show off. But is everyone out there just growing perfect plants that never brown, dry up, or die? Because that’s all I see out there. And personally, I’d like to see some of the imperfect stuff. – Just to compare with MY imperfect stuff. I think it helps.
So here’s our imperfect experience with growing an Avocado tree from a “Avozilla” seed [Godzilla size avocado].
Overall, it’s pretty easy to root an avocado seed. We did everything the same for the XL avocado seed that we would do for the regular size. The Avozilla progressed the same as the regular seeds and looked to be a success. So we put this big, beautiful, avocado tree in a foxy orange pot. [Small, but big – you know what I mean.] Absolutely stunning! What a show stopper. And look at those XL leaves! Showing off, it feels so good.

We’re goldfish and get distracted.
Fast forward again, approximately 24 hours. We had left our new baby outside in the Arizona heat. STUPID! We weren’t planning on leaving it outside. But life happens, one thing leads to another, and boom, we forget about it until the next morning.
Two big leaves dried up to a light crisp. Not super dry, but no good. In my mind this plant is now on life support? I give it a 50/50 shot at being able to thrive?
[Insert excuses] It wasn’t in the sun. We left it under our covered patio in full shade. We’ve left other plants outside for a day or so after a deep watering, let the babies get some fresh air. BUT, note to self, this does not include Arizona S U M M E R air. It’s just too hot for most plants. Lesson learned.

So we removed the dried up leaves and are hoping the big guy will bounce back and thrive.
Stay tuned to see what happens to Avozilla #1. I will be updating, good or bad.

If by chance Avozilla #1 doesn’t survive, we’ll be sad. But in the end, it’s not that big of a deal. We’re working with food scraps people! We’ll grow another. Which is awesome. If you can get your hands on a Giant Avocado, we definitely recommend snagging it. Enjoy a delicious guacamole and then grow an avocado tree from the seed! It’s easy, just don’t leave it the scorching heat! We got the original XL avocado from the Asian Market.
Thanks for readying, Alyssa.
