Starting a Vegetable Garden – Part 5

Day 29-43 / 1 Month Garden Update

1-1.5 month garden update.  We have solid growth in the grow bags and the starter cells are still producing strong little babies.  As expected, some of the weeker transplants have been dying off but we have maintained 2+ of everything we planted.  The exception being our 1 artichoke, which is still kicking.

Day 29

Around this time the gardening burn out started to sink in.  Plus I [Alyssa] got Covid!  So the bare minimum was done to keep these guys watered.  During this period, it felt like a chore to water and keep an eye on all of the seedlings.  But we managed to keep everything alive and kept things moving.  Over the next 2 weeks some serious growth prompted a [very temporary] little trellis made of skewers and plastic twine?  And then a larger trellis made from plastic fencing, garden stakes and zip ties.

Day 43

Garden update, we’re about a month and a half in.  Overall things look good.  Things to note:

  • The snow peas have powdery mildew [not great].  It could be from the artichoke?  Also, the artichoke had some tiny little bugs on it [really not great, gross].  We sprayed the snow peas and artichoke with some neem oil.  Hopefully we caught it early enough before either issue spreads.
  • We direct sowed some corn.  Prayers.

More transplants coming in hot.  Stay tuned.
